AkzoNobel looking for circular paint/coating solutions

Traditional paints and coatings are in linear production systems only using obvious recycling opportunities. Waste paints and packaging are often disposed of in incinerators and landfills. Transitioning to the circular economy could change that. AkzoNobel is looking for startup (tech) companies and institutes that can help us find circular solutions!

About AkzoNobel

We’re experts in the proud craft of making paints and coatings, setting the standard in color and protection for 226 years. Our world-class portfolio of brands – including Dulux, International, Sikkens and Interpon – is trusted by customers around the globe. Many things you touch and use every day are protected by paints and coatings – and we’re on famous landmarks too! Like Sydney Harbor Bridge, Australia; Maracanã Stadium, Brazil; Gardens by the Bay, Singapore; Brooklyn Bridge, NY, US.

For AkzoNobel, sustainability means delivering value for all our stakeholders. We still see many opportunities for optimizing the use of material resources across the full coatings value chain. We will continue to do our part in the transition to a circular economy while living up to both financial and societal expectations. For example, the cooperation between AkzoNobel and Dutch company Black Bear, used car tires are being harvested for carbon black, and used as a pigment in powder coatings.

Paint the Future: Do you have a circular solution?

Transformation to a circular model is not the same as only promoting the recycling of paints and coatings. Circular economy means finding alternative sources (recycled or biobased) for our raw materials, creating industrial symbiosis, shared economy, “product as a service”, increased durability of substrates, detoxification of material cycles as well as extending the functionality of the materials in paints and coatings after their use. It requires a different mindset to recognize the potential for circular solutions, while overcoming legal and practical hurdles

Paint the Future is open to early-stage tech companies and institutes around the world. Our collaborative approach puts you in touch with expert advice, resources and connections to help you accelerate, test, launch and scale your idea.

What can you see in our value chain that we cannot? Have you found a new way to improve resource productivity? Can your solution help us offer competitive and more sustainable solutions to our customers? Through the use of bio-based or recycled raw materials? Reduction of paints and coatings waste, or high-value repurposing?

Help us give paints and coatings an active role in the transition to a circular economy, in a way that is sustainable and cost-effective. We would love to hear from you!
